Ophiolite derived material as parent rocks for Late Jurassic bauxite: evidence for Tithonian unroofing in the Northern Calcareous Alps (Eastern Alps, Austria)

چکیده

Abstract In shallow-water limestones of the Plassen Formation in Tirolic nappe Northern Calcareous Alps, bauxite was formed on karstified and tilted platform margin grainstones to boundstones around ?Kimmeridgian/Tithonian boundary, or Early Tithonian as proven by Protopeneroplis striata Weynschenk, Labyrinthina mirabilis Salpingoporella pygmaea Gümbel. The established top obducted ophiolite stack. onset unroofing at Kimmeridgian/Tithonian boundary exposed ophiolites weathering, forming laterites, bauxites. weathered ophiolitic material shed tilted, emerged, platform, where accumulated. Continued subsidence led flooding, a transgressive carbonate sequence sealed XRD analysis yields composition mainly boehmite with hematite some berthierine, kaolinite, chromite. SEM verified magnetite, hematite, rutile, chromite, zircon, ferropseudobrookite, ilmenite, monazite, xenotime, garnet distributed pisoids within matrix. reach millimeter size partly show cores older, larger pisoids. chromites indicates an origin. Geochemical examination using major- trace elements points mafic andesitic basaltic parent contaminated highly fractionated rocks from island arc. bauxites confirms Middle Late Jurassic obduction. This followed uplift orogen onwards after period relative tectonic quiescence platforms during Kimmeridgian stack Neo-Tethys ophiolites.

Neogyroporella? gawlicki n.sp., a New Dasycladale from the Upper Jurassic–Lower Cretaceous “Lärchberg Formation” of the Northern Calcareous Alps, Austria

The Upper Jurassic to Lower Cretaceous shallow water platform carbonates of the Northern Calcareous Alps (Plassen Formation, “Lärchberg Formation”) and the resedimented deposits of the latter within basinal series (Barmstein Limestone, Tressenstein Limestone) are currently under re-investigation (SCHLAGINTWEIT et al., 2003; GAWLICK et al., 2005). This shallow water development is directly linke...

Subduction tectonic erosion and Late Cretaceous subsidence along the northern Austroalpine margin (Eastern Alps, Austria)

The Late Cretaceous to Early Tertiary subsidence history of the Northern Calcareous Alps (NCA) records the effect of two independent basin formation mechanisms at the northern leading margin of the Austroalpine unit. The terrestrial to shallow-marine sediments of the Lower Gosau Subgroup were deposited mainly within small, fault-bound basins during a phase of strike-slip faulting from the late ...

Late Pleistocene climate change and landscape dynamics in the Eastern Alps: the inner-alpine Unterangerberg record (Austria)

Drill cores from the inner-alpine valley terrace of Unterangerberg, located in the Eastern Alps of Austria, offer first insights into a Pleistocene sedimentary record that was not accessible so far. The succession comprises diamict, gravel, sand, lignite and thick, fine grained sediments. Additionally, cataclastic deposits originating from two paleo-landslide events are present. Multi-proxy ana...

Terricolous Lichens in the Glacier Forefield of the Pasterze (Eastern Alps, Carinthia, Austria).

The investigation of lichens on soil, plant debris and terricolous mosses in the glacier forefield of the Pasterze yielded 35 lichen species. Placidiopsis oreades Breuss (Verrucariales) is new to Austria. Three sampling sites were established at increasing distance from the glacier, in order to compare species diversity, abundance and composition within the forefield and with four other glacier...

Growing evidence for the existence of glacial refugia of European beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) in the south-eastern Alps and north-western Dinaric Alps

Background and Purpose: It is widely accepted that south-European peninsulas were major refugial areas from where European beech, Fagus sylvatica L., spread to the rest of Europe in the Holocene. The aim of this paper is to review and evaluate all the available data and present different types of evidence, some of them new or overlooked until now, to support the hypothesis on the existence of g...
